Livestock depredation by leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) in Vansda Taluka, South Gujarat

Human-wildlife conflict is of growing concern because it threatens the survival many wildlife species. This especially true in case large felids, most which are threatened primarily due to anthropogenic causes, with accounting for highest mortality. Due increase number leopard and reduction land area, human-leopard has increased, though direct human interference not seen but indirect use natural prey decreased base drastically have increased humans forms major one livestock depredation. In this study, we attempt elucidate ecological social factors that drive such agricultural landscape Vansda taluka South Gujarat. We report an average 21.8 incidents depredation a year by leopard. The Goats 43.12%, poultry 27.06 Cow 19.72% formed frequently attacked amongst regions, attacks (n=62) were North zone followed Central (n=26) taluka. Leopard’s attack on near sugarcane field was recorded during early morning (49.59%) late evening (28.46%). study revealed total 50.46% evening, 80.20% infants 75.63% when tied shed. useful recommendations concluded out forest department, local NGOs farmers/villagers area.
